Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET)

A gentle and effective method for growing your family on your timeline.

Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET) is a fertility procedure where a previously frozen embryo is carefully thawed and transferred into the uterus during a future cycle. This process is often used after IVF, allowing patients to delay pregnancy for medical, personal, or scheduling reasons while still using high-quality embryos.

FET is a safe, reliable option that offers excellent success rates, especially when the timing and uterine environment are optimized. It’s also an essential option for patients who’ve chosen preimplantation genetic testing (PGT), fertility preservation, or who are returning for a sibling journey.

What to Expect

Your fertility team will work with you to determine the best time for the embryo transfer, usually based on a natural or hormone-controlled cycle. Before the procedure, the uterine lining is monitored and prepared to ensure it is thick and receptive. When the time is right, the embryo is gently placed into the uterus using a thin catheter under ultrasound guidance, no surgery or anesthesia is required.

A gentle and effective method for growing your family on your timeline.

Step 1: Initial Consultation. Meet with your fertility specialist to review your medical history, embryo details, and the best timing for your transfer. Your care plan will be tailored to your goals and cycle type (natural or medicated).

Step 2: Uterine Lining Preparation. You’ll begin hormone medications (usually estrogen) to thicken your uterine lining. If you’re doing a natural cycle, we’ll monitor your ovulation instead.

Step 3: Monitoring and Timing. Regular ultrasounds and blood tests are performed to track your lining thickness and hormone levels. When your uterus is ready, you’ll start progesterone and schedule your embryo transfer.

Step 4: Embryo Thawing and Transfer. On transfer day, the embryo is carefully thawed and gently placed into your uterus using a soft catheter. The procedure is quick, comfortable, and doesn’t require anesthesia.

Step 5: Post-Transfer Support and Pregnancy Test. You’ll continue progesterone support for 10–14 days. A blood test is scheduled to confirm pregnancy. If successful, your care transitions smoothly to early pregnancy monitoring.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Is FET as successful as a fresh embryo transfer?

Yes. In many cases, FET success rates are equal to or even higher than fresh transfers because the body has had time to recover from ovarian stimulation. The endometrial lining can also be carefully prepared to be more receptive.

Once your cycle starts, preparation for FET usually takes about 2 to 3 weeks. The actual transfer is a quick outpatient procedure that takes only a few minutes.

Yes, many patients receive estrogen and progesterone to help prepare the uterus and support implantation. Your doctor will adjust your medications based on your cycle type, natural or medicated.

Absolutely. FET allows patients to use embryos created in a prior IVF cycle or with donor eggs or sperm. This flexibility makes it ideal for individuals, couples, or LGBTQ+ families planning ahead.

You’ll continue hormone support and come in for a pregnancy test about 10–14 days later. We’ll be with you every step of the way to monitor your progress and support your journey.
