Embryo Genetic Testing (PGT)
Make informed decisions with advanced embryo screening for healthier outcomes.
Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) is an optional but highly valuable step during the IVF process that allows us to screen embryos for chromosomal abnormalities or specific genetic conditions before transfer. This gives you the best chance of a successful pregnancy and a healthy baby.
There are two main types of testing:
- PGT-A (Aneuploidy): Screens embryos for missing or extra chromosomes, which are common causes of miscarriage and failed implantation.
- PGT-M (Monogenic): Tests embryos for single-gene disorders, especially if one or both partners are known carriers of hereditary conditions.
PGT is especially helpful for patients over age 35, those with a history of miscarriage or failed IVF cycles, or couples with known genetic risks. By selecting the most genetically viable embryos, you can increase your chances of success and reduce the risk of passing on serious genetic diseases.
How It Works: Step-by-Step
1. IVF Cycle & Embryo Development. Embryo genetic testing can only be performed as part of an IVF cycle. Eggs are retrieved, fertilized with sperm, and monitored as they grow into embryos over 5–6 days.
2. Embryo Biopsy. At the blastocyst stage (day 5 or 6), a few cells are gently removed from the outer layer of each embryo. This biopsy does not harm the embryo and is performed by trained embryologists.
3. Cryopreservation. After the biopsy, embryos are frozen (vitrified) and safely stored while the genetic testing is completed.
4. Genetic Analysis. Biopsied cells are sent to a specialized lab for detailed chromosome or gene analysis. Results are typically available in 7–14 days.
5. Embryo Transfer. Once testing results are in, our team will guide you in selecting the healthiest embryo for transfer. You can proceed with a frozen embryo transfer in a future cycle when you’re ready.
