Embryo Gender Selection (PGS)

Empowering families with informed choices through advanced embryo screening technology.

Embryo Gender Selection using Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS), now more commonly known as PGT-A (Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidy), allows intended parents to choose the sex of their future child during an IVF cycle. This is achieved by analyzing embryos for chromosomal makeup, including sex chromosomes (XX for female, XY for male), before transfer to the uterus.

In addition to gender selection, this screening helps identify chromosomally normal embryos, increasing the chances of a successful pregnancy and reducing the risk of miscarriage. Gender selection is often sought for family balancing or to avoid sex-linked genetic conditions.

How It Works: Step-by-Step

1. IVF and Egg Retrieval. The process begins with ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval as part of a standard IVF cycle.

2. Fertilization. Eggs are fertilized with sperm to create embryos in the lab.

3. Embryo Biopsy. On day 5 or 6 of development, a few cells are safely biopsied from each embryo’s outer layer (trophectoderm).

4. Genetic Analysis (PGT-A). The biopsied cells are sent to a specialized genetics lab to analyze all chromosomes, including X and Y, for sex identification and chromosomal normality.

5. Results and Selection. Results are reviewed with you. Based on your preferences and medical advice, a healthy embryo of the desired gender is selected for transfer or freezing.

6. Embryo Transfer. A single healthy embryo is transferred into the uterus during a fresh or frozen embryo transfer cycle.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Is embryo gender selection legal and available in the U.S.?
Yes, gender selection using PGT-A is legal and available in the U.S. for non-medical and medical reasons, though it may not be offered by all clinics.
PGT-A can reduce the risk of transferring embryos with chromosomal abnormalities, but it does not guarantee a successful pregnancy or the absence of all health conditions.
Embryo biopsy is a safe and widely used procedure. When performed by experienced embryologists, it has minimal impact on embryo development.
While gender can be identified in multiple embryos, most clinics recommend transferring only one embryo at a time to reduce risks. Twin selection may be discussed in specific cases.

PGT-A has a high accuracy rate, over 99%, in determining embryo sex based on chromosomal testing.
